Animal: cape dwarf chameleon

Conservation status: Vulnerable

Main threats: Restricted, fragmented range

Cape dwarf chameleon are found in the canopy of forests, bushes and urban gardens, They ground up to 15cm in length, have prehensile tails and claws designed for gripping twigs. When provoked they can inflate themselves to look bigger to scare others off.

Habitat loss is due to urbanisation, which is the key threat. They are also subject to predation by domestic cats and caught by the pet trade. Climate change and further habitat loss is predicted to see their habitat shrink by a further 50% by 2050.
